Cavaliers split with Coffeyville

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --  The Johnson County Community College baseball team came away with a split against Coffeyville Community College, but the Cavaliers should have had a sweep.

In the first game, sophomore pitcher Dustin Holthaus took a one-hitter and a 5-1 lead into the sixth inning. However, JCCC committed two errors to the start the sixth inning, and Coffeyville took advantage scoring six runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead.

The Cavaliers fought back in the seventh inning, scoring twice to tie the game at 7-7, but a JCCC error in the bottom of the seventh led to the eventual winning run.

The second game was all JCCC. The Cavaliers first nine batters each had a hit and scored a run in the first inning. That provided freshman pitcher Brandon Droge more than enough run support to win his fifth game of the season. JCCC had 21 hits and scored 17 runs in a five inning game. Droge, Blake Gosch and Jake Smith combined for a two-hitter.

The Cavaliers now stand 26-14 and 19-9 in the conference, good for second place.
