Cavaliers sweep Rockhurst JV
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College baseball team, ranked ninth in the NJCAA Preseason Poll, recorded doubleheader sweep over Rockhurst University JV, Feb. 20, and improved to 3-0 on the season. The Cavaliers easily won the first game, 17-2, then capped the day with a 7-2 victory.
In the first game, runs came early and often for the Cavaliers in their home opener. JCCC scored 17 runs on nine hits. Freshman David Morgan led the barrage, going 3-for-4 with six RBI. Sophomore Nate Thomas was 2-for-3 and drove in two runners.
On the mound, freshman Zach Smith recorded his first collegiate win tossing four shutout innings and only allowing two hits. Freshman Brad Alberts finished the game allowing no earned runs.
Pitching was the highlight of game two. Freshman Gage Daniels got his first start and was almost perfect in his debut. Daniels pitched four innings with eight strikeouts, no walks and gave up only one hit. Sophomore Ben Runyon came in to throw one pitch and get the Cavaliers out of their only jam of the day, while sophomores Blake Gosch and Nick Holtgrieve pitched scoreless innings to finish the game.
