Cavaliers sweep Greyhounds in conference opener

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The JCCC baseball team opened its 2009 conference slate with a sweep against Ft. Scott Community College Thursday afternoon.  The Cavaliers won the first game 11-8, then capped the day with a 10-8 victory.

The Cavaliers are now 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in the KJCCC.

In game one, sophomore All-American pitcher Brandon Droge improved to 4-0 on the mound, and sophomore Nick Holtgrieve picked up his second save. JCCC led
10-1 entering the fifth, but four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth allowed the Greyhounds back in the game. Holtgrieve came in with bases loaded and one out in the sixth and pitched brilliantly to get out of the jam and then pitched around two JCCC errors in the seventh to preserve the win.

Game two was a mirror image of game one. JCCC dominated for much of the game and was up five runs in the seventh inning.  A few walks coupled with high winds allowed Fort Scott back into the game, pulling within two runs with one out.  JCCC again went to Nick Holtgrieve, who after a shaky start, settled down to get the last two outs of the inning to pick up his second save of the day, and third on the season.

Offensively the Cavaliers were racing to the bat racks as they scored 21 runs in the double header.  John Lenherr, Sam Stucky, and Davis Morgan each had homeruns for the Cavaliers.  Defensively David Drahozal made several exciting plays and the defense turned four double plays on the day.

The Cavalieršs are back in action today at home starting at 1 p.m., against Ellsworth Community College.
