JCCC pitchers nail down sweep over Coffeyville
OVERLAND PARK, KS – The JCCC baseball team used quality pitching and timely hitting yesterday to post a sweep over Coffeyville, and remain in first place in the East Jayhawk Conference standings. JCCC won the first game 4-2, then posted a shutout of 2-0 in the second game.
In the opening game, JCCC had to come from behind in late innings to pull out the 4-2 win. JCCC was down 2-1 before coming to life with three runs in the sixth inning to pull out the victory. John Lenherr, J.P. LaMunyon, Tanner Funk, and Nate Thomas provided the fire power in the sixth. Brandon Droge pitched six innings of four hit baseball to improve his record to 8-1. His eight wins match his season total from his All-America season last year. He also moved into second place all-time at JCCC with 16 career victories, one behind the career record set last year by Travis Blankenship, now at the University of Kansas. Nick Holtgrive finished the game to pick up his 10th save of the season.
In the second game, the Cavaliers won 2-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Gage Daniels. He pitched six innings of scoreless baseball to improve his record to 7-2. Holtgrieve came in and pitched a perfect seventh to pick up his 11th save on the season. Holtgrieve is 11-for-11 in save opportunities and has a perfect 1-0 record. With each save, Holtgrive continues to add to his school record total.
JCCC used small ball to plate the only runs in the game. Sam Stuckey picked up two hits while Brian McCulloch, LaMunyon, and Mike Sartin each had one hit apiece.
JCCC is now 31-6 on the year and 17-3 in conference. They picked up a game in conference standings and now have a three game lead on Cowley County.
