Future Cavaliers taken in 2009 MLB Draft
OVERLAND PARK, KS Two future Johnson County Community College baseball players, Jeff Soptic and Vince Spilker, were selected in the 2009 Major League Draft last month. Both players committed to the JCCC program, but could sign to play professional baseball.
Soptic, a graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School, was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 43rd round (Pick # 1292). Soptic is described as an outstanding pitcher who can light up the radar gun. His fastball is 88-92 and he has a lot of upside.
Spilker, pitcher/infielder from Raytown High School, was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 49th round (Pick # 1489). Spilker is a very athletic pitcher who has a fastball that has been clocked as high a 92 mph.
³Both players are currently in negotiations with the respective teams that drafted them,² said head coach Kent Shelley. "We hope to see both of them in a Cavaliers uniform next year because these young men are only going to get better with time. We wish them only what is best for their futures."
