Eleven Cavaliers earn baseball all-conference honors
OVERLAND PARK, KS – A record 11 members of the Johnson County Community College baseball team were recently honored as All-East Jayhawk Conference performers for the 2009 season. The previous high was eight in 1992 and 1999. Sophomore outfielder John Lenherr , freshman designated hitter Davis Morgan and freshman pitcher Gage Daniels were first-team selections. All three were also selected to the NJCAA All-Region VI first-team. Sophomore first baseman Brian McCulloch, sophomore pitchers Brandon Droge and Nick Holtgrieve and freshman shortstop J.P. LaMunyon earned second team honors. Freshman catcher Sam Stucky, freshman third baseman Tanner Funk, freshman pitcher Zach Smith and sophomore second baseman David Drahozal were honorable mention selections.
Lenherr, the team’s MVP, had an amazing season and career at JCCC. Lenherr led the team with a .439 average. He also tied his own school record for hits in a season with 83, and added his name on top of the all-time hits record with 166. Lenherr also had 18 doubles, four triples, five home runs, 45 RBI and scored 65 runs. He hit .432 over his career with 33 doubles and 89 RBI. His 33 doubles rank second all-time, and his 89 RBI tie for eighth at JCCC.
Morgan hit .387 this season (65-for-168) with a school record 24 doubles, seven home runs, a team-high 58 RBI and 43 runs. Morgan’s 58 RBI rank fifth in JCCC history. His 65 hits tie for 19th.
Daniels had a tremendous first year on the hill. He led the starting staff in innings (83.1), ERA (1.09), strikeouts (83) and tied for lead with 10 victories. His 10 wins tie for third on JCCC’s season chart and his 83 strikeouts tie the fifth-best season total. Daniels was 10-3 overall.
McCulloch hit .399 in 2009 (67-for-168) with 12 doubles, a home run, 42 RBI and 34 runs scored. His 67 hits tie for 16th on the Cavaliers’ season chart. McCulloch also had a solid glove at first base, posting a fielding percentage of .984.
Droge, an All-America selection last season, posted a 10-2 record with 50 strikeouts in 83.3 innings in 2009. He also had an ERA of 2.48 and led the staff with 15 games started. Droge also set a new standard for career wins with 18, games started with 29, and innings pitched with 174.1. he also ranks fifth in career strikeouts with 124 and 17th in ERA at 1.81.
Holgrieve was the team’s top stopper out of the bullpen finishing with a school record 12 saves. Holtgrieve pitched 30.2 innings in 26 games, allowed only seven earned runs and posted an ERA of 1.60. For his career, Holtgrieve had 13 saves, also a new team record.
LaMunyon had the task of replacing All-American and Gold Glove winner Doug Otto at shortstop this year and lived up to the task. LuMunyon hit .355 (55-for-155) with 10 doubles, a triple, two homers, 44 runs and 32 RBI. With his glove, he posted a fielding percentage of .925.
Stucky hit .325 (52-for-160) with five doubles, two triples, two home runs, 32 runs , 18 stolen bases and 36 RBI. He was also solid behind the plate, posting a .989 fielding percentage.
Funk batted .390 (53-for-136) with 19 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 41 runs and 44 RBI. His 19 doubles rank fourth on JCCC’s season chart.
Smith was the team’s third starter in the rotation and finished with a 7-2 record, with 33 strikeouts in 57 innings and a ERA of 2.09. He started 10 games with ties him for 24th on the season chart.
Drahozal hit .299 (41-for-137) with nine doubles, two triples, 46 runs, 11 steals and 26 RBI. He also led the team with 33 base-on-balls. He had 52 career walks which rank him tied for 10th all-time at JCCC.
