 Café Tempo features art on a plate

When the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art opens, so will Café Tempo. The creative forces behind this effort are JCCC’s own Dining Services and executive chef Tim Johnson.

The breakfast and lunch menu will offer a variety of options for museum visitors and college faculty and staff. In the morning, patrons can expect seasonal quiche and omelets. Fresh fruit, granola and a wide range of breakfast pastries will accompany award-winning coffee drinks. After touring the museum, visitors can relax with a unique appetizer, tasty salad, a traditional sandwich, a mouthwatering hot panini, or one of Chef Johnson’s daily artful presentations. The Nerman Museum and Café Tempo will be Kansas City’s new destination to see, savor and be seen. The cafe seats 110.

Executive chef Tim Johnson joined JCCC’s Dining Services team in spring 2006. Before that, Johnson spent 12 years at one of Kansas City’s most prestigious venues, Webster House Restaurant. He was the executive chef and served as catering sales manager as well as restaurant manager. He has been in the foodservice business more than 22 years.

Johnson has an associate’s degree in occupational sciences from The New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vt. Upon graduation in 1989, he began his career as executive sous chef with Bon Appetite in San Francisco, Calif. He managed the daily production of numerous venues ranging from catering divisions, office parks and university commissaries. Johnson has prepared meals for many dignitaries during his career, including Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Vice President Dan Quayle, Governor Mel Carnahan, and Senators John Ashcroft and Kit Bond. In 2004, Johnson was an invited chef for the Harvesters’ Classic dinner at the American Restaurant in Kansas City. This past spring, he won a bronze medal at the National Association of College and University Food Service Culinary Challenge.
