Free assistance is available from the Math Resource Center tutors every hour the center is open. The tutors wear nametags so they are easy to identify. Most tutors can assist you in most courses, but you may want to look at the "Who Can Help You?" bulletin board, located under the clock at the front desk. There, you will find lists of tutors who help with courses such as Business Math and Statistics. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance if you need it. Tutors circulate around the room and help you as soon as they are available. Please work while you are waiting. You may spend as much time as you wish in the MRC. Videotapes are available that cover nearly every mathematics class taught at JCCC. In addition, there are videotapes to instruct you on the use of Texas Instruments graphing calculators. The MRC videotapes must be viewed in the MRC. A complete list of available videos is located on the bulletin board in the MRC video room, and copies of the list are available for pickup. Many of the videos can also be checked out from Billington Library. One copy of the current textbook for each JCCC mathematics course is available for use in the MRC. Textbook solution manuals are available for most JCCC mathematics courses and must be used in the MRC. According to the requests for the manuals, students may be asked to share them. Students who want to work on their math without disturbance can use the MRC quiet room. Nine carrels are available, allowing students to be near the assistance and resources of the MRC, yet work in a quieter atmosphere. No talking is allowed in the quiet room. Any group of three or more students may request to use one of the two MRC group study rooms to study math together, if the room is not already reserved for another group. Reservations may be done in advance or on an impromptu basis. The MRC Computer Lab is a discipline-specific lab. In other words, it is to be used for mathematics. Tutorial programs are available for several classes. Other programs are symbolic manipulators and graphers, such as Mathematica, Derive and Converge. The statistical software Minitab is available as well. Academic Systems/Plato, Hawkes Learning Systems, and MyMathLab are available on the MRC computers, for students who are required to use those programs in their math classes. All programs available in the MRC Computer Lab are listed on the bulletin board in the computer lab, and copies of the list are available for pick-up. Technical assistance is available from the lab assistant, and mathematical assistance is available from the MRC tutors and supervisor. Many mathematical references, including mathematics encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodicals and videotapes, can be found in the MRC professional library. Students may check out these resources for use in the MRC. Profiles are available for all JCCC mathematics instructors. These profiles include information about the instructors themselves, their teaching styles and their expectations. Students are encouraged to read the profiles so they can choose instructors who most closely fit their own learning styles and needs. A Problem Solving Strategies handout and bookmark are available to help students gain an awareness of a variety of learning tools. Each person learns in a unique way, and it is empowering for students to learn how to take advantage of their individual strengths. TI graphing calculators perform so many functions it is sometimes hard to keep track of the steps needed to accomplish a particular task. Notes are available that describe procedures for graphing, working with matrices, and using the statistical and financial aspects of the calculators. To check out any resource for use in the MRC, a student will be required to give one of the following as collateral:
