Description:

This course provides in-depth knowledge about materials used in interior spaces. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to evaluate the quality of interior materials; demonstrate the ability to use catalogs and other product information resources; identify manufacturing and/or construction techniques used in products; use correct terminology to describe the various types of interior materials; and compare the design, use, durability and cost of materials. 3 hrs./wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Use correct terminology to describe the various types of products.
  2. Use catalogs and other resources.
  3. Identify manufacturing and/or construction techniques used in products.
  4. Evaluate the quality of interior materials.
  5. Compare design, use, durability and cost of materials.
  6. Develop a personal resource system.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Using Correct Terminology to Describe the Various Types of
Products
   A. Use correct terminology relating to materials.
   B. Use correct terminology relating to resources.

II. Using Catalogs and Other Resources
   A. Identify sources for various materials.
   B. Use catalogs, the Internet and other resources to research
information about specific products.

III. Identification of Manufacturing and/or Construction Techniques Used
in Products
   A. Identify construction techniques that affect the quality of the
product.
   B. Identify the availability and sources for a product.
   C. Explain the environmental impact of construction of various
products.

IV. Evaluation of the Quality of Interior Materials.
   A. Describe features of floor coverings, wall coverings, architectural
casework, upholstered furniture, case goods, accessories and antiques.
   B. Explain the environmental impact of product use in interior spaces.
   C. Identify how building codes, flammability codes and government
regulations affect material specification and selection.

V. Comparing Design, Use, Durability and Costs of Materials
   A. Describe the appropriate use of the material.
   B. Identify stylistic factors and trends affecting material selection.
   C. Explain installation factors that affect the material selection.
   D. Compare the life expectancy and cost of various materials.
   E. Determine correct maintenance and care factors for various
materials.

VI. Developing a Personal Resource System
   A. Gather reference information concerning materials.
   B. Develop a usable resource system for future reference.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Projects and assignments  60% of grade
Exams                     40% of grade
  Total                  100%

Grade Criteria 
  A = 90 - 100%
  B = 80 -  89%
  C = 70 -  79%
  D = 60 -  69%
  F =  0 -  59%

Caveats:

  1. Students are required to take field trips on the specified date as part of the course requirements. Personal transportation is required.
  2. Students will need basic word processing and Internet searching skills for the completion of some papers, exercises and projects.
