Title: Conversational Chinese Effective Term: Fall 2009

Description:

This course is designed to enhance the ability of students to express themselves orally in Chinese through vocabulary building and reiteration of essential grammatical structures. The vocabulary will stress everyday situations and current events. 2 hrs. lecture/wk.

Supplies: Refer to the instructor’s course syllabus for details about any supplies that may be required.

Prerequisite: FL 193 Intermediate Chinese II
or two years of high-school

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Handle everyday conversational situations in Chinese.
  2. Achieve a good standard pronunciation in Chinese.
  3. Master vocabulary presented in handouts.
  4. Master fundamental grammatical structures crucial to self- expression in all tenses.
  5. Understand a short dialouge or composition in Chinese and answer questions in both Chinese and English.
  6. Perform naturally guided conversation in Chinese on selected topics.
  7. Compare Chinese and American cultures and customs.
  8. Function in Chinese while traveling in China; i.e. ask directions, obtain lodging, food and drink, change money.
  9. Use circumlocutions or paraphrases to handle unknown vocabulary.
  10. Gain addtional knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture.
  11. Gain additional knowledge of Chinese society before and after 1949.

Content Outline & Competencies:

   I. Topics of Everyday Life
      A. Discuss understandably and accurately food.
      B. Discuss understandably and accurately entertainment.
      C. Discuss understandably and accurately travel.

  II. Personal Beliefs and Opinions
      A. Discuss basic ethics.
      B. Discuss basic philosophy.
 
 III. Chinese Culture, Society, and History
      A. Discuss Chinese culture accurately and understandably. 
      B. Discuss Chinese social concerns accurately and understandably. 
      C. Discuss Chinese history accurately and understandably.
      D.  Discuss Chinese customs accurately and understandably.
      E. Discuss Chinese values accurately and understandably. 
      F. Discuss Chinese current events accurately and understandably.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Class participation: 40-60% of grade
Examination: 20-30% of grade
Written Assignments: 20-30%of grade
 
Grade Criteria:
90-100   =  A
80- 89   =  B
70- 79   =  C
60-69    =  D
 0-59    =  F

Caveats:

  1. In all cases, students will speak entirely in Chinese and will use intermediate level speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar and sentence complexity.
