Title: Photoshop for the Web: Photoshop Effective Term: Spring 2009

Description:

This course is designed to explore the preparation of digital photographs and images for the Web using a variety of techniques and tools. Optimizing images for the Web, creating Web graphics using slices and rollovers, and creating animated images for the Web will be covered. 1 hr. lecture/wk.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $15 to $90.

Supplies: Refer to the instructor’s course syllabus for details about any supplies that may be required.

Prerequisite: CDTP 155 Desktop Photo Manipulation II: Photoshop

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Optimize images using Photoshop.
  2. Optimize a JPEG and a GIF image.
  3. Control dither.
  4. Specify background transparency.
  5. Create an image map.
  6. Use batch-processing file optimization.
  7. Create and optimize slices in Photoshop.
  8. Create rollovers.
  9. Preview sliced images in a browser.
  10. Create simple motion.
  11. Create a transition between image states.
  12. Create a two-step animation.
  13. Rotate and move an object.
  14. Create a montage sequence.
  15. Use advanced layer features to create animations.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Course Overview
   A. Review course outlines and methods of instruction.
   B. Review course objectives and competencies.
   C. Discuss the prerequisites.
   D. Review Photoshop I and II.

II. Optimizing Image for the Web
   A. Optimize JPEG and GIF files and adjust the optimization settings to
achieve the desired balance between file size and image quality.
   B. Adjust the amount of dithering applied to an image.
   C. Define a transparent background for an image.
   D. Create a hypertext image map.
   E. Batch-process files to automate the optimization process.

III. Creating Web Graphics Using Slices and Rollovers
   A. Slice an image using four different methods.
   B. Optimize each image slice using various settings and file formats.
   C. Create "no image" slices to contain text and HTML.
   D. Create rollover buttons in a banner.
   E. Apply a warped text style to the image that appears only when the
rollover button is in its Over state.
   F. Show or hide certain layers in the image when a rollover button is
in its Over state or Down state.
   G. Generate an HTML page that contains the sliced image in a table.


IV. Creating Animated Images for the Web
   A. Open a multilayerd image to use as the basis for the animation.
   B. Use the Layers palette in conjunction with the Animation palette to
create animation sequences.
   C. Make changes to single frames, multiple frames and an entire
animation.
   D. Use the Tween command to automatically vary layer opacity and
position across frames.
   E. Preview animations in a Web browser.
   F. Open and edit an existing animated GIF image.
   G. Optimize the animation using the Optimize palette.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

A minimum of 4 projects       80% of the grade
A minimum of 1 examination    20% of the grade
                             100%

Grade Criteria:
   90-100   A
   80-89    B
   70-79    C
   60-69    D
   0-59     F

Projects will be completed using the Photoshop application.
