Description:

This course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform competently as a Unix system administrator. Students successfully completing this course should be able to perform basic system administration tasks including installing, configuring and troubleshooting a basic Unix system, managing devices, implementing the printing environment, creating and maintaining file systems, installing packages, and configuring the graphical user interface. 2 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. lab/wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Perform advanced Unix installations.
  2. Execute advanced systems administration utilities.
  3. Implement advanced systems configuration techniques.
  4. Implement and configure client TCP/IP network components, such as FTP, DNS, DHCP and NIS.
  5. Establish connectivity with other networks.
  6. Install and configure multiple Unix client and server roles.
  7. Install and configure software.
  8. Apply advanced Unix troubleshooting techniques.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Install Unix Operating System
   A. Perform the Unix installation process.
      1. Configure dual boot systems.
      2. Perform unattended installations.
      3. Install Unix over the network.
      4. Perform client installations and configure connectivity.
   B. Select and configure Unix roles.
      1. Modify Unix configuration files.
      2. Use command line configuration tools.
      3. Use GUI configuration utilities.
      4. Configure services.

II. Perform Advanced Systems Administration
   A. Select and implement file systems.
   B. Perform system maintenance.
   C. Review problem solving logs.
   D. Perform advanced user account management and customization.
   E. Analyze system performance.

III. Explain and Implement Client Connectivity With Other Networks
   A. Implement and configure domain name system.
   B. Implement and configure network information service.
   C. Implement and configure dynamic host configuration protocol.
   D. Implement and configure network files system.
   E. Implement and configure file transport protocol.
   F. Implement Internet connectivity.

IV. Install Software
   A. Install and configure end user applications.
   B. Manage software components.

V. Troubleshoot Unix Components
   A. Review configuration files.
   B. Utilize performance utilities/monitors.
   C. Troubleshoot TCP/IP.
   D. Explain and resolve common problems.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

  A = 90 - 100%
  B = 80 -  89%
  C = 70 -  79%
  D = 60 -  69%
  F =  0 -  59%
