Description:

The beginning golfer will be given instruction in the rules of and basic swing fundamentals for the game of golf. Proper golf equipment, proper use of this equipment and golf etiquette will be reviewed. 2 hrs./wk. HPER mini-courses meet an additional 16 hours on a modular schedule. This course will meet the general education requirement for Health and/or Physical Education.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $80 to $400.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Outline the major historical events for the game of golf.
  2. Recognize how the game of golf is contested.
  3. Create a checklist for selecting proper golf equipment.
  4. Demonstrate the proper grip.
  5. Demonstrate the proper stance.
  6. Demonstrate the proper swing fundamentals.
  7. Demonstrate the elements of changing/correcting the individuals swing fundamentals.
  8. Discuss the adjustments needed for difficult golf shots.
  9. Demonstrate the proper pitching and chipping fundamentals.
  10. Demonstrate the proper putting fundamentals.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. History of Golf
   A. Explain the major historical events of golf.
	
II. How to play the game of golf
   A. Outline the rules of golf
   B. Compute a sample golf score for a 18 hole contest
   C. Create a checklist for establishing a handicap
   D. Develop a strategy for each hole
   E. Describe and demonstrate proper etiquette on the golf course

III. Grip
   A. Describe and demonstrate the fundamentals of the proper grip
   B. Differentiate between a strong and weak grip
   C. Create a checklist for the grip

IV. Stance
   A. Demonstrate the proper foot position, body position and address to
the ball.
   B. Create a checklist for the proper address.

V. Swing
   A. Demonstrate the correct backswing.
   B. Demonstrate the correct downswing.
   C. Demonstrate a slice swing plane.
   D. Demonstrate a hook swing plane.
   E. Describe the process of setting your target (aiming).
   F. Develop a checklist for the proper swing plane

VI. Correcting Faults
   A. Create a checklist for correcting the slice
   B. Create a checklist for correcting the hook.
   C. Describe and correct the problem of topping the ball.

VII. Adjusting to difficult golfing situations
   A. Demonstrate the proper technique for hitting the following: Downhill
lie, Uphill lie, Sidehill lie - ball lower than your feet, sidehill lie -
ball higher than your feet, playing from the rough, playing from the
woods, playing from the fairway bunker, playing in the wind.

VIII. Pitching & Chipping
   A. Demonstrate the pitch shot
   B. Demonstrate the chip shot
   C. Demonstrate the bunker shot around the green

IX. Putting
   A. Demonstrate the proper ball alignment
   B. Demonstrate the proper putting stroke.
   C. Describe the “reading of the green”. 
   D. Describe the “reading of the slope”.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

In-class physical demonstration of competencies 40-60% of grade
Written Examinations                            20-30% of grade
Skills Development Examinations                 20-30% of grade
Projects                                         0-10% of grade
Total                                             100%
