Description:
Students in intermediate swimming will learn more advanced swimming
strokes, skills and safety information along with increasing personal
fitness levels through continuous endurance swimming. 1 hr./wk. This
course will meet the general education requirement for Health and/or
Physical Education.
Associated Costs: These are
additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should
expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $25 to $80.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate the correct form for the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl, sidestroke, and breast stroke.
- Perform the survival float and survival stroke for 5 minutes.
- Enter the water from a height.
- Tread water comfortably and in control.
- Swim under water from a short distance, eyes open.
- Swim continuously with good stroke mechanics and proper turns for 10 minutes.
- Provide assistance to an individual using a non-swimming rescue technique.
- Discuss and review the personal fitness benefits through continuous swimming.
- Demonstrate various activities in a safe manner while in and around aquatic facilities.

I. Basic Swimming Strokes A. Perform the Front Crawl stroke B. Perform the Elementary backstroke C. Perform the sidestroke D. Perform the breaststroke E. Perform the back crawl II. Entering the water A. Demonstrate a dive into the water B. Demonstrate a long shallow dive C. Perform an entry from a height D. Perform a stride jump III. Surface Dives and turns A. Perform a pike surface dive B. Perform a tuck surface dive C. Perform a feet first surface dive D. Execute a front turn E. Execute a back turn F. Execute a flip turn IV. Underwater Swimming and Treading Water A. Demonstrate an underwater swim with eyes open B. Tread water for five minutes V. Survival Float and Survival Stroke A. Perform the survival float B. Perform the survival stroke VI. Sculling A. Demonstrate sculling in a prone position B. Demonstrate sculling in a supine position C. Demonstrate sculling in a vertical position VII. Personal Safety Skills A. Demonstrate proper use of a personal flotation device B. Demonstrate reaching and extension rescues from land C. Demonstrate Artificial Respiration VIII. Additional Strokes and Variations A. Perform the butterfly stroke B. Perform the inverted breaststroke C. Perform the overarm sidestroke D. Perform the inverted scissors kick E. Perform the trudgeon stroke IX. Continuous Swimming A. Demonstrate continuous swimming using any of the strokes with good mechanics and proper turns for 10 minutes.
Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
In-Class Physical demonstration of competencies 40-60% of grade
Written Examinations 20-30% of grade
Skills Development Examinations 20-30% of grade
Projects 0-10% of grade
Total: 100%
