Description:

Students in beginning swimming will learn basic swimming skills and safety information that are fundamental to safe swimming performance. 1 hr./wk. This course will meet the general education requirement for Health and/or Physical Education.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $25 to $80.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Enter the water without fear, with controlled breathing and immerse themselves.
  2. Demonstrate 3 types of floats: prone, back and survival.
  3. Execute the crawl stroke 25 yards.
  4. Execute the elementary back stroke 25 yards.
  5. Perform the survival stroke for 2 minutes.
  6. Enter in shallow and deep water under control, swim 10 yards and return to the point of entry.
  7. Tread water for 1 minute.
  8. Demonstrate proper use of a Personal Flotation Device.
  9. Provide assistance to an individual using a non-swimming rescue.
  10. Describe the safety aspects that should be used around and in the water.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Adjustment to the water and physical laws applied to body movements
in water
   A. Overcome fear of water
   B. Explain the physical laws applied to body movements in water
   C. Demonstrate entering the water
   D. Explain and demonstrate breath control
   E. Explain and demonstrate underwater breath holding
   F. Demonstrate bobbing
   G. Demonstrate rhythmic breathing
   H. Explain how to see and hear underwater

II. Body Position, Floating and Relaxation in the Water
   A. Execute the prone float and recovery
   B. Execute the jellyfish float
   C. Execute the back float and recovery
   D. Execute the prone glide
   E. Execute the back glide
   F. Perform the survival float
   G. Execute sculling in a vertical position, supine position and a prone
position

III. Movement through the water and coordinated stroking
   A. Execute the prone glide with flutter kick
   B. Execute the back glide with flutter kick
   C. Perform the beginner stroke with proper leg action
   D. Perform the beginner stroke with proper arm stroke and breathing
   E. Demonstrate the arm stroke on the back
   F. Demonstrate the combined stroke on the back
   G. Perform the crawl  stroke
   H. Perform the elementary back stroke
   I. Perform the survival stroke
   J. Demonstrate underwater swimming
	
IV. Entering the Water
   A. Demonstrate leveling off from a vertical position and swimming
   B. Demonstrate jumping into shallow water
   C. Demonstrate jumping into deep water
   D. Execute a front dive from the edge of  the pool
   E. Execute a surface dive

V. Treading Water and Changing Direction
   A. Demonstrate treading water
   B. Demonstrate changing direction while moving across the water
   C. Demonstrate turning over
   D. Demonstrate changing positions in the water
   E. VI Safety Considerations 
   F. Identify when and where to swim
   G. Identify  the dangers in the water
   H. Discuss cramps, exhaustion and panic
   I. Demonstrate personal safety practices 
   J. Discuss personal safety practices at home pool, ponds, beaches and
rivers.
   K. Select and use proper personal flotation devices (PFD)
   L. Demonstrate use of personal flotation device while swimming,
floating and jumping in the water.
   M. Perform reaching and extension rescues
   N. Demonstrate Artificial Respiration

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

In-Class Physical demonstration of competencies  40-60% of grade
Written Examinations                             20-30% of grade
Skills Development Examinations                  20-30% of grade
Projects                                          0-10% of grade
                    Total:                         100%

  1. Strenuous exercise.
