Description:
This is an introduction to ballroom dance with emphasis on basic patterns
and fundamental steps of the waltz, fox trot, swing, polka and cha-cha.
Common rules of dance courtesy and a brief overview of ballroom dance
history will be included. Music or dance background is not necessary. 2
hrs./wk. This course will meet the general education requirement for
Health and/or Physical Education.

These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students
should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $20
to $40.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Perform basic steps in foxtrot, polka, cha-cha and western two-step and line dances in rhythm with the music.
- Develop knowledge of basic courtesy on the dance floor.
- Explore that ballroom dancing is enjoyable.
- Explore as a part of a fitness routine and stress reliever.

I. Foxtrot A. Demonstrate the proper dance position of foxtrot B. Perform basic step specific to foxtrot C. Perform turns required of the foxtrot D. Explore variations of basic step of foxtrot II. Polka A. Demonstrate the proper dance position of polka B. Perform basic step specific to polka C. Perform turns required of the polka D. Explore variations of basic step of polka III. Cha-Cha A. Demonstrate the proper dance position of cha-cha B. Perform basic step specific to cha-cha C. Perform turns required of the cha-cha D. Explore variations of basic step of cha-cha IV Swing A. Demonstrate the proper dance position of swing B. Perform basic step specific to swing C. Perform turns required of the swing D. Explore variations of basic step of swing V. Western Dance A. Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
In-Class physical demonstration of competencies 40-60% of grade
Written examinations 20-30% of grade
Skills development Tests 20-30% of grade
Projects 0-10% of grade
Total: 100%
