Description:

The student will have the opportunity to learn and practice the fundamentals of bowling. The student will be introduced to the history of the game, rules, equipment and lane specifications, scoring, handicap calculations, and operation of automatic scoring equipment. 2 hrs./wk. HPER mini-courses meet an additional 16 hours on a modular schedule. This course will meet the general education requirement for Health and/or Physical Education.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the rules and principles of bowling.
  2. Student will select and demonstrate proper use of equipment
  3. Demonstrate the proper techniques and be able to identify and correct common faults.
  4. Explain and demonstrate the scoring, scoring average and handicap system..
  5. Discuss the benefits of bowling as a social, physical, recreational and competitive activity.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Rules and Principle of Bowling
   A. Review the history of bowling.
   B. List and explain the terms of bowling.

II. Selection of equipment
   A. The student will discuss the differences of equipment and the
equipment specifications.
   B. Demonstrate the proper selection and use of bowling equipment.
   C. Discuss the “bowling lane(s)” characteristics.
	
III. Proper techniques of Bowling
   A. Explain and practice the correct fundamentals of bowling
   B. Discuss and correct common faults in the stance, approach, delivery
and release.
   C. Discuss and demonstrate the techniques of strikes and spares.
   D. Demonstrate the starting positions and execute the correct
approach.
   E. Review the use of “rangefinders” as targets.
   F. Review and discuss lane courtesy and etiquette of bowling.

IV. Scoring
   A. Manually compute and properly score the game.
   B. lectronically compute and properly score the game.
   C. Demonstrate the proper use of the electronic scoring equipment.
   D. Calculate the individuals average and compute the handicap system.
   E. Review and explain tournament rules.
	
V. Benefits of Bowling
   A. Explore the social interaction of the activities.
   B. Outline the physical benefits of bowling.
   C. Discuss the relaxation components of recreational bowling.
   D. Discuss the complexities of bowling on a competitive level.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

In-class physical demonstration of competencies   40-60% of grade
Written Exams                                     20-30% of grade
Skill Development Tests                           20-30% of grade
Projects                                           0-10% of grade
   Total                                            100%
