Description:
This course is designed to enhance students' ability to express themselves
orally in Russian through vocabulary building and reiteration of essential
grammatical structures. The vocabulary will stress everyday situations and
current events. 2 hrs./wk. This course may be offered as a Learning
Communities (LCOM) section, see current credit schedule for LCOM details.
Supplies: Refer to the instructor's course syllabus for details about any supplies that may be required.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Handle everyday conversational situations in Russian fluently.
- Achieve a good standard pronunciation in Russian, eliminating as much as possible English contamination.
- Master vocabulary presented in handouts.
- Master fundamental grammatical structures crucial to self-expression in all tenses.
- Understand a short dialogue or composition in Russian and answer questions on it in both Russian and English and be able to ask questions to clarify something not initially understood.
- Perform extemporaneously a guided conversation in Russian on selected topics.
- Discuss U.S. government/culture/customs vis a vis those of Russian speaking countries.
- Function in Russian while traveling in a Russian-speaking country; i.e., ask directions, obtain lodging, food and drink, change money.
- Sustain at least an elementary debate on ethical or philosophical issues in Russian (with the aid of a dictionary).
- Use circumlocutions or paraphrases to handle unknown vocabulary.
- To incorporate changes in the Russian economic and political conditions into classroom discussions thereby increasing awareness of socio-economic issues as they relate to American business.
- Gain additional knowledge and appreciation of Russian culture.
Content Outline & Competencies:
I. The student will participate effectively in conversations in Russian on topics of everyday life, including food, entertainment and travel. A. Speak with correct pronunciation B. The student will participate effectively in conversations in Russian about personal beliefs and opinions in the realm of ethics and philosophy. A. Speak with correct pronunciation B. Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
5-7 exams 50% of grade
Two final exams 20% of grade
Numerous daily quizzes 10% of grade
In-class performance 20% of grade
100%
Grade Criteria:
90 - 100% A
80 - 89% B
70 - 79% C
60 - 69% D
0 - 59% F
