Description:

This course is designed to enhance the ability of students to express themselves orally in Japanese through vocabulary building and reiteration of essential grammatical structures. The vocabulary will stress everyday situations. 2 hrs. lecture/wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

1. Handle everyday conversational situations in Japanese fluently.
2. Achieve a good standard pronunciation in Japanese, eliminating as much as possible English contamination.
3. Master vocabulary presented in handouts.
4. Master fundamental grammatical structures crucial to self-expression in all tenses.
5. Understand a short dialogue or composition in Japanese and answer questions on it in both Japanese and English and be able to ask questions to clarify something not initially understood.
6. Perform extemporaneously a guided conversation in Japanese on selected topics.
7. Discuss U.S. culture and customs vis a vis those of Japan.
8. Function in Japanese while traveling in Japan; i.e., ask directions, obtain lodging, food and drink, change money.
9. Use circumlocutions or paraphrases to handle unknown vocabulary.
10. Gain additional knowledge and appreciation of Japanese culture.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I.Students will participate in conversations in Japanese on topics of
everyday life, including:
   A. Discuss understandably and accurately food.
   B. Discuss understandably and accurately entertainment.
   C. Discuss understandably and accurately travel.

II. Students will participate in conversations in Japanese about personal
beliefs and opinions.
   A. Discuss basic ethics.
   B. Discuss basic philosophy.

III. Students will participate in conversations in Japanese about Japan.
   A. Discuss Japanese culture accurately and understandably.
   B. Discuss Japanese social concerns accurately and understandably.
   C. Discuss Japanese history accurately and understandably.
   D. Discuss Japanese customs accurately and understandably.
   E. Discuss Japanese values accurately and understandably.
   F. Discuss Japanese current events accurately and understandably.

(In all cases, students will speak entirely in Japanese and will use
intermediate level speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar and sentence
complexity.)

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Tests(major exams, daily quizzes and final exam): 40% of grade
Class Participation:			          50% of grade
Written Assignments:			          10% of grade
					         100%
Grade Criteria:
90 - 100 = A
80 -  89 = B
70 -  79 = C
60 -  69 = D
 0 -  59 = F
