Description:

A continuation of the presentation of the vocabulary and basic structural patterns of Italian, this course will emphasize the development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. Cultural material also will be integrated into the course. This course is taught in the spring semester. 5hrs./wk.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $8 to $20.

Prerequisite: FL 160 Elementary Italian I
or one year of high-school Italian

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Construct grammatically correct sentences in the future and conditional tenses
  2. Write related sentences and short paragraphs on learned material
  3. Respond in brief phrases and some sentences to questions about familiar topics.
  4. Use linguistic components properly that will facilitate supporting of opinions, hypothesizing, linking thoughts and providing transitions
  5. Demonstrate cultural understanding and sensitivity to behaviors, expectations, and traditions.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Construct Grammatically Correct Sentences in the Future and
Conditional Tenses     
   A. Conjugate verbs in indicative and subjunctive moods.
   B. Compare like and unlike qualities and quantities.
   C. Recognize and reproduce double object pronoun combinations.
   D. Give and react to commands, both formal and informal.

II. Write Related Sentences and Short Paragraphs on Learned Material
   A. Write short (8 - 10 sentences) paragraphs on familiar topics.
   B. Accurately translate more complex words and sentences from English
to Italian and Italian to English.
   C. Create longer written and spoken sentences utilizing more complex
vocabulary.
   D. Write messages, letters, and short compositions on a directed topic
related to text.

III. Respond in Brief Phrases and Some Sentences to Questions About
Familiar Topics
   A. Make statements using learned materials expanding occasionally. 
   B. Express opinions and understand expressed opinions.
   C. Ask for clarification and clarify.
   D. Give advice and suggestions.
   E. Express agreement and disagreement.
   F. Narrate a story or event.

IV. Use Linguistic Components Properly that will Facilitate Supporting of
Opinions, Hypothesizing, Linking Thoughts and Providing Transitions
   A. Recognize and reproduce "if" clauses.
   B. Understand sequence of tenses.
   C. Incorporate transitional vocabulary accurately in speaking and
writing.

V. Demonstrate Cultural Understanding and Sensitivity to Behaviors,
Expectations and Traditions 
   A. Discuss major cultural similarities and differences between Italian
and American culture.
   B. Describe features of Italian-American culture.
   C. Recognize some of the major figures of Italian music and art.
   D. Recognize basic geographical information of Italy.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Daily quizzes             33 1/3% of grade
Mid-term and final exams  33 1/3% of grade
Attendance, participation,
and homework              33 1/3% of grade
                         100%

Grade Criteria:

90 - 100%  A
80 -  89%  B
70 -  79%  C
60 -  69%  D
 0 -  59%  F
