Description:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to compare American and European retail merchandising, advertising and visual presentation. This travel-for-credit course includes visits to selected European cities.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $3000.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

1. Define and use vocabulary common to the dress periods studied.
2. Identify the influences of the art periods to include religion, politics, art and social customs.
3. Recognize and identify fashion pieces from selected European countries.
4. Compare and contrast fashion pieces observed in museums, salons, and antique stores in the cities visited.
5. Compile a field study photo journal and a written journal.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Define and use vocabulary common to the art periods studied.

II. Identify the influences of the art periods to include religion,
politics, art and social customs.

III. Recognize and identify furniture pieces from selected European
countries.
   A. Identify historical developments as they relate to social customs.
   B. Explain how religion and politics relate to social structure and
art.

IV. Compare and contrast fashion dress and accessory pieces observed in
museums, salons, and stores in the cities visited.
   A. Explain identifying features of dress pieces.
   B. Explain identifying features of accessory items.

V. Compile a Field Study Photo Journal and a Written Journal
   A. List a daily itinerary.
   B. Compile notes from presentations and seminars.
   C. Gather brochures and literature.
   D. Relate personal opinion about presentations and site visits.
   E. Integrate photos with written compilation.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Pre-Departure Exam = 25% of grade
Trip Journal       = 25% of grade
Photo Journal      = 25% of grade
Final Paper        = 25% of grade
Total               100%

Caveats:

1. The cost of the trip will be approximately $3,150.
2. Countries will be chosen depending upon monetary conversion rates and political unrest.
3. Student must own or have access to a camera.
4. This course will necessitate a large amount of walking and standing.
5. Any student with a health problem should contact a physician prior to enrolling.
6. Students must have current U.S. passport.
7. Students must pass all FASH courses with a grade of "C" or higher for the Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design degrees.
