Description:

This course will introduce the student to the commands and techniques required to effectively access the resources of the Internet. Windows applications to browse the Internet, locate and retrieve information and send and receive electronic mail will be covered. 1 hr. lecture/wk.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $10 to $20.

Supplies: Refer to the instructor's course syllabus for details about any supplies that may be required.

Prerequisite: CPCA 105 Introduction to Personal Computers: Windows
or
CPCA 106 Introduction to Personal Computers: Macintosh
or
CPCA 128 PC Applications: MS Office
or
CIS 124 Introduction to Computer Concepts and Applications
or appropriate score on an assessment test

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the history and development of the Internet.
  2. Explain what netiquette is including some of the more common rules.
  3. Define security issues on the Internet.
  4. List the hardware components of an Internet connection.
  5. Describe how to setup and establish an Internet connection.
  6. Use a graphical application to browse the Internet.
  7. Explain URL addresses.
  8. Send electronic mail.
  9. Read electronic mail.
  10. Use search tools to search the Internet for information.
  11. Use a browser to locate and download a file.

   A. Use a World Wide Web browser to browse the World Wide Web
   B. Identify hypertext links and URL's
   C. Run multiple Web sessions

   A. Add a favorite
   B. Modify favorites
   C. Organize favorites

IV. Locating And Retrieving Information
   A. Use multiple search engines to search the Internet
   B. Save and print retrieved information

V. Electronic Mail 
   A. Set up an e-mail account
   B. Create an address book
   C. Send e-mail messages
   D. Send e-mail messages with attachments
   E. Read and reply to e-mail messages

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Projects       60% of course grade
Examinations   40% of course grade
              100%

   90 - 100%   A
   80 -  89%   B
   70 -  79%   C
   60 -  69%   D
    0 -  59%   F
