Description:
This 100-contact-hour course is designed to meet the updated techniques for
estheticians in the cosmetology sciences and the needs of students who
desire exposure to advanced esthetics techniques. Students will attend 100
hours of lecture/demonstration and lab practice. Topics covered include
body treatments, theory on the day spa, advanced makeup techniques,
microdermabrasion and manual lymphatic drainage. For enrollment
information, call 913-469-2390. The in-state tuition and fees total
$1,162. The out-of-state tuition and fees total $2,080.Enrollment in
certain courses may require a professional liability fee of $16.00.
Students will be notified via their JCCC student e-mail account if the fee
is due and instructions on how to pay the fee.
Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket)
expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the
course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $15 - 25.

| Prerequisite: | Must possess current esthetics license granted by the Kansas Board of Cosmetology, a current cosmetology license, or the minimum of 650 hours of esthetics training from an education institution. |

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate positive human relations and professional attitude.
- Demonstrate an ability to conduct a proper skin assessment and client consultation for advanced skin treatments and indicate which treatments are appropriate.
- Explain and demonstrate how to use machines and other apparatus for advanced professional skin care, including hair removal, body treatments, facial treatments, and manual lymphatic drainage.
- Set up a treatment room and prepare a client for treatment.
- Identify Kansas statutes and Kansas Board of Cosmetology policies and procedures pertaining to advanced esthetics techniques.
- Explain and demonstrate methods of advanced makeup application.
Content Outline & Competencies:
I. Human Relations and Professional Attitude.
A. Describe the necessary skills to manage a facility
B. Demonstrate how to attain your clientele
II. Advanced Body Treatments
A. Demonstrate proper draping
B. Demonstrate use of specialized body treatment equipment
C. Apply knowledge of contraindications to the body
III. Advanced Makeup Application Techniques
A. Apply correct technique for special event application
B. Demonstrate the ability to apply corrective or camouflage makeup
IV. Day Spa Theory, Microdermabrasion and Laser Treatments
A. Demonstrate knowledge of the day spa
B. Define and demonstrate various methods of microdermabrasion
1. Crystal based system
2. Non-crystal based system
C. Define indications and contraindications of laser therapy
V. Proper Safety Measures When Providing Advanced Techniques and Services
A. Demonstrate proper safety measures when applying equipment for body
treatments
B. Demonstrate proper safety measures when applying LED light therapy
VI. Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Chemical Peels.
A. Define Manual lymphatic drainage and acknowledge contraindications
B. Demonstrate lymphatic drainage with the use of machines
C. Customize chemical peel treatments based on client skin type,
fitzpatrick type, and skin conditions, using:
1. Alpha hydroxy acids
2. Beta hydroxy acids
3. Lactic acid peels
D. Define benefits and contraindications of the three primary chemical
peels
VII. Laws and Policies Related to Advanced Esthetics Techniques and
Treatments
A. Demonstrate scope of practice by adhering to laws set forth by the
Kansas Board of Cosmetology.
B. Determine the best treatment plan utilizing all appropriate
techniques
VIII. Skin Conditions Using Advance Skin Analysis Equipment.
A. Demonstrate the use of computerized operating system for advanced
analysis equipment
B. Conduct a thorough skin analysis with the use of advanced equipment
to determine a treatment plan
Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
35-40% of grade - Rubric 55-60% of grade - Professional Presentation, Interpersonal Relations and Sanitation 100% Grade Criteria: A = 94-100% B = 88-93% C = 82-87% D = 75-81% Minimum requirement to pass F = less than 75%

- The contact hours for this course are not applicable toward any degree or certificate at JCCC other than a certificate of completion.
