Description:

The in-state tuition is $312, and the out-of-state tuition is $1,230. This class meets 136 laboratory hours of the 1,000 contact hours required by Kansas State Board of Cosmetology. Enrollment in these courses require a professional liability fee of $16.00. Students will be notified via their JCCC student e-mail account if the fee is not paid.

Supplies: Refer to the instructor's course syllabus for details about any supplies that may be required.

Prerequisite for part- and full-time students: CO 121 Esthetics Lab

Corequisites for part- and full-time students: CO 127 Intermediate Esthetics
and
CO 129 Intermediate Esthetics Clinical

a grade of "C" or higher.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Perform sanitation procedures in accordance with state law.
  2. Demonstrate the different methods of hair removal.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of cosmetics and makeup application techniques.
  4. Follow appropriate business practices and state laws.
  5. Apply math and writing concepts to the practice of esthetics.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Sanitation
   A. Follow Kansas Board of Cosmetology state law regulations 
   B. Demonstrate how to prevent the spread of bacteria
   C. Practice methods of sterilization and sanitation employed in the
salon

II. Skin Treatments
   A. Identify characteristics of skin:
      1. Degrees of aging
      2. Fitzpatrick types
      3. Skin types
   B. Consider muscular structures, functions, and various nerves that are
affected during facial treatments
   C. Demonstrate Manual Lymphatic Drainage
   D. Demonstrate alternatives to European Massage Treatments, such as
acupressure
   E. Demonstrate techniques necessary to prepare and perform body
treatments
      1. Conduct proper set-up
      2. Use appropriate draping techniques for various treatments
      3. Properly use Reflexology in body treatments
   F. Demonstrate safety precautions in using electricity
      1. Select the appropriate electrical current
      2. Demonstrate proper use of equipment, including:
         a. Galvanic
         b. High Frequency
         c. Microstimulator (suction machine)
         d. Rotary Brush
         e. Microdermabrasion

III. Hair Removal
   A. Perform proper removal of hair on various parts of the body,
including:
      1. Brazilian
      2. Nose
      3. Stomach
      4. Chest
      5. Hairline
   B. Use proper sanitation and aseptic procedure in hair removal
services

IV. Makeup
   A. Demonstrate methods of makeup applications:
      1. Special Occasion makeup application
      2. Corrective or Camouflage makeup application
      3. Video or Photography makeup application
   B. Apply Lash and Brow Tinting

V. Business Practices
   A. Demonstrate positive human relations
   B. Demonstrate a professional attitude and image in accordance with
JCCC Student Handbook
   C. Maintain client records

VI. Math and Writing Application
   A. Establish and maintain accurate client records
   B. Demonstrate assessments utilizing medical terminology

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Performance Rubrics                 45-50% of grade
Professional Presentation,
Interpersonal Skills, and
Sanitation                          35-40% of grade
Assignments                         05-10% of grade

Grade Criteria:
A = 94 - 100%
B = 88 -  93%
C = 82 -  87% Minimum requirement to submit hours to Kansas State Board of
Cosmetology
D = 75 -  81%
F = less than 75%
