Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to
use pharmacological terminology in an appropriate context. This course
includes an investigation of medication actions, dosage forms, routes of
administration and uses. The course emphasizes the terminology necessary
for transcription of medical reports. This course is taught in the spring
semester only. 2 hrs. lecture/wk.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Define pharmacology.
- Define a variety of drugs, identify their source, and understand how they work.
- Describe the federal laws
- Describe the federal laws that regulate drugs and the agencies that adminster them.
- Explain the rights of patients.
- Describe the effects of age on drug safety and effectiveness, particularly in elderly and pediatric patients.
- Explain the standard immunization, components, actions and recommendations for use.
- Define diseases associated with physical and mental disorders such as anxiety, panic disorders, insomnia, and alcoholism and the drugs used in the treatment of these diseases.
- Define diseases associated with the central nervous system, pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal disease, urinary system, cardiovascular diseases, and the drugs used in the treatment of these diseases.
- Explain the concept of hormones and how they regulate the body.
- Describe and understand the physiology of the skin and classes of drugs used to treat skin disorders.
- Identify neoplastic disease and the classifications of drugs used in treatment.
- Understand total parenteral nutrition, its purposes, ingredients, stability, and complications.
Content Outline & Competencies:
I. Examine the Science of Pharmacology A. Explore the new drugs for the health care market. B. Evaluate drug usage. II. Explain Anti-Infectives, Decongestants, Antitussives, and Expectorants III. Examine Narcotic Pain Relievers and Other Nervous System Drugs A. Explore anesthetics, analgesics, and narcotics. B. Explore antidepressants, antipsychotics, and antianxiety agents. C. Explore anticonvulsants and drugs to treat other CNS disorders. IV. Examine Respiratory, GI, Renal, and Cardiac Drugs A. Describe respiratory drugs. B. Describe gastrointestinal drugs. C. Describe urinary system drugs. D. Describe cardiovascular drugs. V. Examine Non-Narcotic Analgesics, Muscle Relaxers, Hormones, and Topicals A. Describe muscle relaxants and non-narcotic analgesics (NSAIDs). B. Describe hormones. C. Describe topicals, ophthalmics, and otics. VI. Examine Recombinant, Chemotherapy, and Miscellaneous Drugs A. Describe recombinant drugs and chemotherapy. B. Describe vitamins, nutritional supplements, herbs, and antidotes.
Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
Written Exams 60% of grade
Workbook Exercises 40% of grade
TOTAL 100%
Grade Criteria:
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
0 - 59% = F
