Description:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to develop work habits and self-management skills that will affect performance on the job by reducing stress, conflict and miscommunication. 1 hr. lecture/wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Discuss the development of a realistic and positive self-image and personal values.
  2. Develop personal, educational, and professional goals and objectives for self-improvement in the future.
  3. Complete an inventory of learning styles.
  4. Discuss the personality traits conducive to working with others.
  5. Explain critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving.
  6. Present a short oral report and use active listening techniques.
  7. Prepare a chart displaying how you spend your time and analyze ways to save time.
  8. Discuss financial and stress concerns which you might encounter as you enter a career.
  9. Discuss a well-balanced approach to maintaining good health.
  10. Explain how needs influence career choices.
  11. Define and explain the importance of being responsible, conscientious, and working under pressure.
  12. Explain the importance of skills in a job search.
  13. List all components necessary for seeking employment.
  14. Define and explain the importance of being responsible and conscientious, and working under pressure.
  15. Conduct a simulated job search and follow-up.
  16. Compose a letter of application and resume.
  17. Describe proper business attire.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Developing Emotional Potential
   A. Explain personal values and beliefs.
   B. Discuss the importance of a positive self-image.
   C. Identify personal qualities necessary for success in life and a
career.
   D. Write personal, educational, and professional goals.

II. Develop Intellectual Potential
   A. Identify and utilize techniques to improve memory.
   B. Define and explain critical thinking, problem solving, and creative
thinking.
   C. Discuss learning styles and identify your personal learning style.

III. Develop Physical Potential
   A. Explain a balanced diet.
   B. Discuss health concerns—drugs, exercise, alcohol, tobacco
diseases.

IV. Develop Social Potential
   A. Describe techniques to improve communication.
   B. Describe active listening components.
   C. Identify the components included in effective speaking.
   D. Discuss beliefs and values that are essential for good human
relations.
   E. Describe group dynamics and how goals, standards of behavior, roles,
norms and communication patterns are formed.
   F. Identify and select appropriate business attire.

V. Develop an Action Plan
   A. Describe how change and stress in your life can change your thinking
and decision-making abilities.
   B. List good time management techniques and be able to analyze how to
spend your time wisely.
   C. Discuss the financial pyramid, budgeting, investing, and expenses.
 
VI. Preparing for Your Career
   A. Prepare an individual inventory of skills, interests, education, and
experience.
   B. Complete the steps required in a job search.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Exams                               = 40% of grade
Assignments, activities and quizzes = 60% of grade
  Total                              100%

   Grading Criteria:
   90 - 100% = A
   80 -  89% = B
   70 -  79% = C
   60 -  69% = D
    0 -  59% = F
