Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to
develop keyboarding speed and accuracy in medical formats. The student
should also be able to improve keyboard skills by completing drills and
activities pertaining to the transcription of medical reports. 1 hr.
lecture/wk.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Develop medical keyboarding speed proficiency.
- Reduce medical keyboarding error ratio through individualized practice.
- Establish medical keyboarding speed and accuracy goals.
- Format medical documents correctly using appropriate grammar and punctuation.
Content Outline & Competencies:
I. Medical Documents A. Format letters, memos, reports, meeting agendas and minutes dealing with medical office material within a required timeframe. B. Format medical documents, such as chart notes, history/physical exam summaries, assessment and referral reports within a required timeframe. C. Apply correct punctuation and grammar to medical documents. D. Use proofreaders’ marks correctly. II. Timed Writings A. Demonstrate timed writing speed and accuracy by completing timed tests. B. Record and print timed writing reports. III. Skillbuilding A. Demonstrate skill by completing diagnostic, progressive, and paced practice writings. B. Build speed and accuracy by completing supplementary timings. C. Measure skill development progress at regular intervals throughout the course. D. Record and print skillbuilding reports.
Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
Timed Writings 35% of grade
Tests 15% of grade
Medical Documents 50% of grade
Total 100%
Grading Criteria:
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
0 - 59% = F
Upon entry to this course each student’s keyboarding skill level will be
measured. The student and instructor will determine the progress and
outcomes to be measured throughout the course and establish and set
appropriate goals.
