Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to
review basic arithmetic, operate the electronic calculator by touch to
build speed and accuracy, use basic calculator functions and operating
controls, and solve business application problems. 1 hr./wk.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate speed and accuracy in using the 10-key touch system of operating an electronic calculator.
- Solve basic functions and applications of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on the electronic calculator.
- Calculate percentages using multiplication and division.
- Learn to use the electronic calculator to calculate problems with multiple and constant factors.
- Operate the electronic calculator using memory keys.
- Solve business problems on the electronic calculator which include decimal placement, percent, discounts, taxes, subtotals, and totals.
Content Outline & Competencies:
I. Use the Touch System to Operate the Numeric Keys on the 10-Key Pad Including Decimals A. Locate and key the number keys using the touch system. B. Add and subtract whole numbers on the calculator. C. Use the decimal selector correctly. D. Add and subtract decimal numbers. II. Determine Place Value and Rounding A. Show the place value of a digit in a number. B. Round numbers to the required place. C. Predict the direction of an inequality. III. Multiply and Divide Whole Numbers and Decimals A. Multiply and divide whole numbers with decimals using the touch system. B. Convert fractions and mixed numbers to decimals. C. Solve business problems requiring multiplication and division. IV. Use the Constant A. Use the constant function in multiplication and division. B. Solve business problems using a constant. V. Use the Memory Keys A. Add, subtract, and recall amounts in memory. B. Solve business problems using the memory key. VI. Determine the Meaning of Percent A. Convert among fractions, decimals, and percents. B. Find an amount, rate, or base when the other two are given. VII. Calculate Discount and Sales Tax A. Find a discount amount and net cost. B. Calculate sales tax on an invoice. C. Solve business problems containing discount, sales tax, subtotals, and totals.
Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
Timed Writings (3 Highest) 46% of grade
Selected Lesson Assignments 8% of grade
Application Tests (3) 46% of grade
TOTAL 100%
Grade Criteria:
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
0 - 59% = F
