Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to
operate a computer keyboard by touch to enter data with speed and
accuracy. 1 hr./wk.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Identify and operate the basic parts of a computer and printer.
- Navigate through the windows environment utilizing keyboarding software.
- Key the alphabetic and service keys by touch.
- Operate the numeric keypad by touch.
- Demonstrate proper keyboarding technique.
- Key 19 WAM with 97 percent accuracy.
- Proofread and correct keyboarding errors.

I. Introduction to Computer Equipment
A. Demonstrate the use and operation of the computer.
B. Demonstrate the use and operation of the printer.
II. Introduction to Computer Software
A. Navigate through windows to retrieve keyboarding software.
B. Enter and access student ID.
C. Navigate through keyboarding software.
1. Retrieve student data.
2. Select lessons to be keyed.
3. Access reports.
4. Exit and close software.
III. Alphabetic and Service Keys
A. Operate and identify the correct location of the alphabetic keys and
service keys.
B. Demonstrate proper reaches to the alphabetic and service keys.
C. Develop straight-copy keyboarding skills.
1. Complete keyboarding software lessons.
2. Complete correlating textbook keyboarding lessons.
3. Take timed writings.
D. Improve keystroking and build skill.
1. Complete skill building exercises.
2. Reinforce skill using keyboarding software games.

IV. Punctuation Keys
A. Operate and identify the punctuation keys.

E. Improve 10 keypad stroking.

VI. Technique and Accuracy Development
A. Demonstrate proper keyboarding technique.

4. Develop proper spacebar stroke.
B. Demonstrate keyboarding fluency and speed.
1. Use fluid continuous keying.

VII. Proofreading
A. Identify and locate incorrect keystrokes in keyed copy.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
Tests 40% of grade
Daily Assignments 20% of grade
Timings (Speed and Accuracy) 40% of grade
Total 100%
Grading Criteria:
90-100% – A
80- 89% – B
70- 79% – C
60- 69% – D
0- 59% – F
