Description:
The class will consist of selected readings in police science on topics
such as police administration, criminal investigation, criminology,
corrections, juvenile problems and evidence. By arrangement.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Identify an area which the student feels is important in his/her future endeavors in law enforcement and in which the student is presently lacking.
- Complete a contract with the instructor to read a specified number of books which will be agreed upon mutually by the student and instructor.
- Explain in his/her own words what was learned from the readings and how the student feels the knowledge will be of benefit in the future. Criticisms of readings will also be expected.
Content Outline & Competencies:
I. Individual Meeting Between Instructor and Student to Identify Area of Readings (Week 1) II. Individual Meeting Between Instructor and Student to Identify Contract and Book Titles (Week 2) III. Individual Meetings Between Instructor and Student to Determine the Student’s Progress (Weeks 3-14) VI. Final Meeting Between Student and Instructor to Discuss Student’s Knowledge Gained from Readings (Weeks 15 and 16)
Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:
Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:
Students will read no fewer than six assigned works and record their
observations on each reading for submission to the instructor. Students
will be expected to discuss the works with the instructor. Letter grade
will depend on the number of works read.
Grade Criteria:
10 Book Reviews = A
8 Book Reviews = B
6 Book Reviews = C
4 Book Reviews = D
0-3 Book Reviews = F
Caveats:
- Students will need basic word processing and Internet searching skills for the completion of some papers, exercises and projects.
