Description:

This course explores the relationship between drugs and crime. Students will become familiar with the effects of drugs on the body. Interventions for individuals harmfully involved with drug use will be explored. Local and federal laws regulating substance use will also be examined. 3 hrs. lecture/wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Define the term drug and distinguish the levels of drug use.
  2. List the major categories of drugs and explain their effects on the body.
  3. Compare and contrast neurological, sociological and psychological theories of drug dependence.
  4. Identify and interpret the components of substance abuse treatment
  5. Analyze the different types of drug treatment programs.
  6. Trace the history of drug use and the corresponding legislation.
  7. Examine the relationship between drugs and crime
  8. Assess trends in prevention, treatment and drug legislation.
  9. Compare cultural differences in choice and use of chemicals.

   C. Learn the risk factors and high-risk populations.

VI. Analyze the different types of drug prevention and treatment
programs.
   A. Describe the role of detox.
   B. Evaluate the pros and cons of outpatient programs
   C. Discuss the efficacy of residential treatment programs.
   D. Examine halfway houses and honor centers
   E. Review self-help groups
      1. Explain 12-step groups 
      2. List the types of meetings
      F.  Discuss the advantages & disadvantages of each type of
treatment
   G.  Discuss the certification process and standards for drug counselors
in Kansas

VII. Recognize Prevention, Confidentiality and Ethical Issues
   A. Discuss methods of ensuring confidentiality in compliance
regulations.

   B. Analyze the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of
1970

reduction as they pertain to the legal system.

   E. Evaluate the efficacy of DARE programs and discuss the implication
of research data concerning this program

IX. Examine the relationship between drugs and crime

				    methamphetamines and opiates

drug use/sale: FBI, ATF, DEA, IRS.

X. Discuss drugs and corrections
   A. Analyze the purpose and function of drug courts
   B. Discuss the role of Community corrections and offender drug use
   C. Discuss the function of institutional drug counselors
   D. Explore the connection between drugs and crime

XI. Assess trends in prevention, treatment and drug legislation.
       A. Explore the methods of appropriate interaction with impaired
individuals by law 
            enforcement, corrections and the court. NEEDS TO BE RE-WORDED
       B.  Identify 4 exemplary models of drug prevention programs and
discuss current    
            prevention research.
       C. Examine drug abuse policy
	1. Critique the strategy of supply reduction 
		a. Assess criminal sanctions
		b. Discuss controlling drugs at their source
	2. Critique the strategy of demand reduction
		a. Examine drug testing
		b. Evaluate criminal prosecution
		c. Debate expanding treatment

 XII. Compare cultural differences in choice and use of chemicals and the
CJ system’s     
         response.
        A. Examine Drug Cultures of Ethnically Diverse Group
        B. Discuss how to approach culturally and ethnically diverse
populations’ use of   
             mood-altering substances. 

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

1. A minimum of three exams which will constitute at least 50% of the
final grade.  The exams will include questions of a factual, analytical
and evaluative nature.

2. Written research, analytical or evaluative assignments which will
constitute at least 25% of the final grade.

3. The remaining percentage will be left to the instructor’s discretion
for such items as participation in class discussion, group activities,
etc.

4. Evaluation criteria for writing:  complete, concrete, correct and clear
writing is a major goal for each project assigned.  In addition,
incorporation of the elements and characteristics of the specific type of
writing is expected.

Caveats:

  1. Students will need basic word processing and Internet searching skills for the completion of some papers, exercises and projects.
