Description:

This is a study of retail security supervision and management. Topics will include employment practices, employee dishonesty, controlling shoplifters, and building and perimeter protection. 3 hrs. lecture/wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Cite personnel management practices conducive to combating employee pilferage.
  2. Explain various preventive techniques for shoplifting.
  3. Describe management and supervising techniques for retail security personnel.
  4. Explain the various elements of physical plant security.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Unit I
   A. List and explain various employment hiring practices.
   B. List and explain elements of effective supervision of employees.
   C. Explain how and when an employer should be terminated.
   D. Cite the laws pertaining to employee rights.

II. Unit II
   A. Describe considerations to be used in hiring and supervision of
security personnel.
   B. List and explain the various preventive techniques for shoplifting.
   C. List and explain the various preventive techniques for employee
pilferage.

III. Unit III
   A. Cite the various aspects of undercover investigation and explain
when they are best used.
   B. Cite and explain building and perimeter security measures.
   C. Cite the various professional organizations and associations and
explain the different emphasis of each.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

   1. Four unit exams
   2. A comprehensive final exam
   3. Participation in a field trip

Grade Criteria:
      90-100% = A
      80- 89% = B
      70- 79% = C
      65- 69% = D
       0- 64% = F

Caveats:

  1. Students will need basic word processing and Internet searching skills for the completion of some papers, exercises and projects.
