Description:

This self-instructional course is designed for the student who wants to learn a systematic format for acquiring a medical vocabulary. The course begins with a study of suffixes and prefixes common to most of the body systems and guidelines for combining word parts and forming plurals. This is followed by a study of each body system and oncological terminology. Any student who is planning a career in any facet of the health care industry will find this course beneficial. An Academic Achievement Center instructor is available to work with students to establish specific goals, administer tests and provide individualized instruction as needed to complete the student's program.

Associated Costs: These are additional (out-of-pocket) expense considerations that students should expect in addition to the course tuition, fees, and textbooks. $0 to $15.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. The ability to apply the rules related to methodology of medical word building.
  2. The ability to apply the rules related to pronunciation of medical terminology.
  3. The mastery of the meaning of prefixes, word roots, combining forms and suffixes.
  4. The mastery of the spelling of prefixes, word roots, combining forms and suffixes.
  5. The ability to build surgical, diagnostic and symptomatic terms related to the body systems.
  6. The mastery of pathological and pharmacological terminology as well as terminology related to special procedures.
  7. The mastery of abbreviations pertaining to each of the body systems.
  8. The mastery of anatomy and physiology of the body systems.

Content Outline & Competencies:

I. Take Pretest to Determine Baseline

II. Apply Rules According to Methodology of Medical Word Building
   A. State the rules.
   B. Apply rules to combine medical terms.

III. Apply Rules of Pronunciation of Medical Terminology
   A. Use pronunciation key.
   B. Pronounce words correctly.

IV. Apply Knowledge of Prefixes, Word Roots, Combining Forms and Suffixes
   A. Define prefixes, word root, combining form and suffix.
   B. Recognize types of suffixes (surgical, diagnostic, symptomatic,
adjective, noun, diminutive, plural).
   C. Recognize types of prefixes (position, color, number, measurement,
negation, direction, miscellaneous).
   D. List steps in defining medical words (1st-suffix, 2nd-prefix,
3rd-root).
   E. Apply steps in defining medical words.

V. Correctly Spell Prefixes, Word Roots, Combining Forms and Suffixes

VI. Build Surgical, Diagnostic and Symptomatic Terms
   A. Build terms related to the body as a whole.
   B. Build terms related to the following body systems: integumentary,
gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, hematic and lymphatic,
musculoskeletal, urogenital, female reproductive, endocrine, nervous and
special senses.

VII. Demonstrate Mastery of Pathological and Pharmacological Terminology
As Well As Terminology Related to Special Procedures for the Following
Body Systems:  Integumentary, Gastrointestinal, Cardiovascular,
Respiratory, Hematic and Lymphatic, Musculoskeletal, Urogenital, Female
Reproductive, Endocrine, Nervous and Special Senses
   A. Build related terms.
   B. Define related terms.

VIII. Recognize Abbreviations Pertaining to Each of the Body Systems
   A. Correctly abbreviate given medical term/procedure.
   B. Interpret medical abbreviations.

IX. Demonstrate Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology of Body Systems
   A. Label diagrams showing body parts.
   B. List functions of body parts.

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

Evaluation will be accomplished by completing the required tests.

Grading Criteria:
 90 - 100% = A
 80 -  89% = B
 70 -  79% = C
 60 -  69% = D
 Below 60% = F

Caveats:

  1. It is the student’s responsibility to read the course syllabus, A.A.C. information sheet and any other material provided to the student by the A.A.C. staff in which procedures, policies, grading guidelines, etc., are explained.
