Description:

This course is designed to teach the principles and policies governing railroad safety and health. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to describe safety and health rules and policies, including applying a team process to improving safety and health, use and care of personal protective equipment, back injury prevention, hazard communications, lockout/tagout procedures, and hearing conservation. Students will be qualified to perform first aid and CPR and will be able to conduct a job safety analysis. 2.5 hrs. lecture/wk.

Prerequisite: Admission to the JCCC's railroad
operations program, mechanical option, and completion
of
RRTM 124 ORIENTA/RR MECHANICAL CRAFT
with a minimum grade of "C"

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Discuss the relationship of a safety program in the day-by-day operations of a modern railroad.
  2. List the personal protective equipment required to perform the daily work on the railroad.
  3. Discuss the need for and the steps to be taken in a task safety program.
  4. Discuss the need for and list the steps in the operation of a hazard communication program.
  5. Discuss the need for and list the steps in the operation of a lockout/tagout program.
  6. Explain the requirements for employee's records (medical and exposure) to be available during working hours.
  7. List and perform (if necessary) steps required in a first aid program.
  8. List and perform (if necessary) steps required in a CPR rescue.
  9. Discuss the need for and list the steps in the operation of a hearing conservation program.
  10. List the steps and write three JSA's over common work tasks.

VIII. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

      3. Chest compression
      4. Checking pulse

IX. Hearing Conservation

Methods of Evaluation of Competencies:

Evaluation of student mastery of course competencies will be accomplished using the following methods:

   Unit Quizzes (2 minimum)   20% of grade
   Final Examination          80% of grade
         Total               100%

Caveats:

  1. This course is designed to be offered in a delivery format of one week of 40 contact hours.
