What role did these groups play in the development of Kansas communities, and what can this history teach us about the myths and realities of immigration, both past and present?

Kansas: Exploring Artists

Join Dr. Allison Smith, Assoc. Professor, Art History, in an engaging discussion of art-making in Kansas. Well known artists such as Aaron Douglas and John Steuart Curry will be addressed, as well as lesser known Kansas folk artists including M.T. Liggett and S.P. Dinsmoor (creator of the Garden of Eden). From 19th century European immigrants (Birgir Sandzen), to contemporary trail blazers (the internationally recognized Roger Shimomura), Smith offers an informative introduction to Kansas Art.

Whether free staters or exodusters, reformers or hayseeds, Auntie Em or Bob Dole, Kansans' histories have not always matched their image, but the two have definitely evolved together. This course explores key moments in Kansas history-the "bleeding" territory period, early twentieth-century progressiveism, and the Dust Bowl-and shows how early depictions of Kansas in national media have changed as a consequence.

Kansas: The Dust Bowl in Literature and Video

Gain a better understanding of the Dust Bowl of the 1930's through books, diaries, songs, photographs, oral histories and video. In this two and a half hour session, we'll move like the wind to read a bit, listen a bit and discuss how the yellow-brown haze and walls of black clouds made life difficult for our Kansas ancestors who struggled to stop the dirt, and watched their crops blow away.

Learn about Kansas water issues from the early irrigation canals of the Arkansas Valley in the 1870's to the present. We Kansans have been over-exuberant in our water usage, and we have set examples for living within one's aquatic means in our one hundred-fifty year history in the central plains. Legal disputes with the State of Colorado, water pollution, the Oglala Aquifer, Cheyenne Bottoms, and Riparian vs. Prior Appropriation water law will be the primary topics.
