Collograph Prints

Discover collograph printing, an offset printing technique using layering of materials to create an image that is inked then pressed onto a clean sheet of paper. Supplies to bring: a few drawings or pictures, card stock (one must be at least 5x7 and then some scraps), scraps of fabric with texture, utility knife, pencil,glue, three inch wide paint brush, white drawing paper and a large wooden spoon.

Portrait Art

Learn about form, perspective and structure of the head in the first two classes. Eight classes will have a live model. The goal is for you to portray a three-dimensional, live person. We will work in one color, 2-3 colors and in full color, with one color work emphasized in the first few classes. Matting and Framing

Learn how to finish and display photographs, drawings and paintings with a hand cut mat and how to pick out the perfect frame. You will learn about archival preservation and proper placement of sometimes delicate artwork. Bring two pieces of flat 2D artwork (photo, drawings or paintings on paper) for the first session and mat board for second session, foam core board to cut on, metal straight edge and pencil.

Art Car

Enjoy an introduction to art cars as we take a donated vehicle and convert it into a rolling gallery/museum/spectacle. The car's design will be hammered out by the class, and the construction completed by taking advantage of the individual talents of the student artists. The final product will be driven, dragged or pushed in the Art Tougeau Parade in Lawrence on May 16th. Be sure to wear your 'getting dirty ' clothes. No prior experience necessary.

Still Life Drawing

You will work with graphite and ink while participating in memory exercises. From these exercises, you will observe in detail and then draw from memory. Bring to class: 18" x 24" drawing pad, Canson or Strathmore; Pencils - H, 2B, 3B, 4B; Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser (white drafting eraser); still life materials, these will vary for the projects. Landscape Drawing, Beginning

Study the various aspects of plein air work (French term for working outside in front of your subject as opposed to working in the studio from photographs or the imagination). Work on all the prime aspects of drawing: values, line, proportions/perspective, composition. Depending on weather, class subjects may be reversed in order. In case of rain we will work indoors and work from a set-up. Bring an outdoor chair and an easel if you have a portable one. Supplies include hardboard or cardboard, pencils (HB to 8B), charcoal pencils (soft or compressed), kneaded eraser, pastels or colored pencils, kleenex or paper towels, masking tape, exacto knife. The first class session will meet at the location listed below. The remaining class sessions will be at off-campus sites to be discussed at the first class meeting.

Develop your drawing skills and get a better understanding of form, values, perspective and proportion through a series of practices. For seven sessions you will be working from a model using charcoal, pencil or other materials. All levels of skill are welcome. Bring to class compressed charcoal (medium to soft), or charcoal pencils (medium to soft), lead pencils (HB-6B), conte, pastels (at least two), and a sketch pad 11 x 7.

Follow the drawing principles of Betty Edwards, based on her book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It will take us through her exercises allowing us to use right brain thinking. Oil Painting: Copying a Master Artist in Oil

Choose oil paintings by master artists and study their methods, composition, color and drawings by copying a painting. The instructor will bring reproductions to class so you can choose which artist to study. For beginning and intermediate students. Stone Carving Workshop

In this introduction to stone carving, you will learn to chip, tear and shear stone. Each student in the class will receive a piece of limestone from a local quarry. Traditional and contemporary carving methods, as well as, the history of stone carving, will be addressed and applied to the work at hand. This workshop is open to everyone; prior experience is not necessary. Wear shoes that cover your feet and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Oil painting is one of the world's most widely recognized mediums. In this class, designed to be helpful for both beginning and intermediate students, we will work from photographs and review the sequential process of creating an oil painting. I'll begin with a demonstration on stretching a canvas and proceed directly to underpainting technique, color analysis, and review various styles of brush work.
