Second Annual Stroke Forum: From Victim to Victor
Every year approximately 730,000 Americans have a new or recurrent stroke -
1 every 45 seconds. That means that at about the time you finish reading

victims will die shortly after their stroke, and only 10% will have near
full recovery. In light of these statistics, much has been done to

traditional rehabilitation drops off, we know people can improve following
stroke when resources are available. This program is co-sponsored by the

Older Adults and Chemical Dependence
Alcohol abuse and addiction in the elderly is a serious problem that more
often than not goes unnoticed. Seniors do not exhibit the same warning
signs as younger people that alert friends and families to the problem.

alone. The consequences are devastating for their mental and physical well
being. Late onset drinkers have a very positive prognosis as do some early
onset IF the problem is addressed effectively. Penny Shaffer will address
the psychosocial and physiological effects of alcohol and prescription
drug abuse on the elderly and signs and symptoms to alert us to the
problem. Ron Griffin will explore effective strategies for intervention,

How Family Systems Respond to Stress
The individual has been the focus of study over the last century for the
stress response. Stress influences individual health and thinking. But
the stress response does not stay contained within the skin of the
individual. Due to our highly interdependent natures, stress spreads
unevenly through marriages, families, work groups, and society. The
family influences the individual's vulnerability and resilience in
adapting to life's challenges. This class reviews how stress affects
individual functioning, and then focuses particularly on how stress
affects a family system, and how the family influences the individual's
adaptiveness. RNs, LPNs, social workers and counselors will earn 4 contact

The Future of Healthcare: Where Are We Going?
Conversations involving health care reform can be heard in the halls of
physician offices, home care agencies, long term care facilities, acute
care hospitals and the United States Congress. Professionals and patients
are worried about the future. What changes will reform provide? One
possibility is that of universal health coverage, but what exactly does
that mean? Will the United States design an all new system or borrow from
the European and/or Canadian models of delivery? Even as discussions
center on universal coverage and cost containment, new questions surface
concerning health care quality. Patient centered health care remains the
ideal, but how much progress has been made in placing patients at the
center of our service models? Is evidence based practice routine? Are we
prepared for the changing demographics and their impact on service design
and delivery? Where do we go from here? Join us for an examination of
current trends impacting health care delivery. RNs, LPNs, social workers,
