New Century Workforce Pathway Scholarship helped Katherine Copley find success as a chocolatier

Many scholarships support your education while you’re working toward your degree or certificate. Others facilitate your transition into the workforce. Katherine Copley, JCCC alumna, knows this firsthand.

After receiving the highest All-USA Academic Team application score in Kansas, Katherine was named a 2018 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar. In addition to being recognized at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention in New York City, Katherine received $1,250 to help jump-start her career as a chocolatier at Christopher Elbow Chocolates.

According to Katherine, “The scholarship helped me get new baking equipment and supplies without worrying about how much I was earning. It facilitates learning without the stress.”

A recipe for success

Students are considered for the All-USA Academic Team based on their:

  • Academic excellence and intellectual rigor
  • Leadership and service
  • Application of education beyond the classroom to benefit society

Anna Page, Associate Professor and Director of Honors, knew Katherine possessed these traits and more, and gladly nominated her for this honor.

“Katherine was an outstanding student who always went the extra mile for any Honors project she was involved in,” Page said. “This scholarship is for career students like Katherine who plan on working after they graduate from JCCC rather than transferring to a four-year school.”

Katherine credits JCCC with giving her the foundation for a successful career.

“At JCCC, you learn how to keep up with demand and how to maneuver high expectations,” she said. “I was home-schooled, so it was an adjustment to go to scheduled classes every day. The Honors Program helped me learn new things at a pace that was best for me.”
