Continuing Education scholarships covered most of the course fees for this CDL-A licensure student. With the training he received from JCCC, he started building his own fleet.

When opportunity knocked, Carlos Barra heard it and applied for CDL-A licensure scholarships through JCCC Continuing Education. Those scholarships covered 93 percent of his fees, costing Carlos just $350 out of pocket to get training for a high-demand, lucrative career.

“It was the best money I ever spent,” said Carlos. “It’s been a life-changing experience.”

“I’m so thankful to JCCC and the scholarship sponsor. I got more than a quality education. The instructors gave us 1,000%.”

License to grow

Carlos had been looking for a more rewarding career. He wanted the freedom of being his own boss. With the scholarship money to pay for courses, he started As One Transportation and saved funds to purchase his own truck.

He admits that being his own boss is sometimes difficult, but says it’s worth it. He can now provide double the income for his family and recently purchased a house with twice the room. “My family and I now live in a whole different world — a better world,” he said.

Carlos encourages others to apply for funds. He says the scholarship application was easy to fill out and the award letter came quickly. “I’m so thankful to JCCC and the scholarship sponsor,” he added. “I got more than a quality education. The instructors gave us 1,000%.”

Future fleet

Carlos has big plans for the next decade. By spring 2020, he hopes to own a fleet of five trucks.

Wise investments back into his company should create more opportunities for business. And he’d like to retire a little early, too.

“It all started at JCCC,” he said. “I’m so grateful.”
