What would you do with $3,000? Jena Halvorson and Kathryn Wilson, students in the Chef Apprenticeship program, know what they will do: put their awards to work making their dreams come true.

Jena and Kathryn are two of just three metro-area students to receive scholarships from the Kansas City, Missouri, chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier. Hannah Broockerd of the Career and Technology Center of Fort Osage, Independence, Missouri, is the third recipient.

Thanks to this honor, Kathryn says, she doesn’t have to worry about making enough money at her full-time job at Harry’s in Manhattan, Kansas, to pay for her final semester.

“I love learning new recipes, especially how and why certain foods are used to create specific dishes.” Kathryn W., Chef Apprenticeship student

“It means a great deal that these professional women in the culinary industry believe in me enough to support me financially,” she says. “After graduation I hope to travel and continue to learn about different cultures and their relationships to food. I love learning new recipes, especially how and why certain foods are used to create specific dishes.”

This international philanthropic, members-only group is made up of women leaders in culinary arts, fine beverage and hospitality. It is dedicated to supporting fellow women starting careers in these fields.

Les Dames d’Escoffier Kansas City also recently welcomed two Cavaliers into its fold. Chef Alison Reed, Hospitality Management Adjunct Assistant Professor, and Jenny Vergara, Events Coordinator for Friends With Taste®, are among the newest members. Chef Mary Berg, Associate Professor of Hospitality Management, has been affiliated with the group since 2001.
