Student Senate Helps Jumpstart Your JCCC Life

November 1, 2017

JCCC Gives Kicks Off in November

This November, the Student Senate invites you to make the holidays a little brighter for someone in need through JCCC Gives.

Until November 3, you can nominate someone in the JCCC family — a student, staff or faculty member — to receive holiday gifts.

  • Student Senate will add the nominees (no names included) to the Giving Tree, which will be in COM 309 from November 7 through December 6.
  • You select a need and
    • donate by debit/credit online or cash or check (due December 8)
    • or purchase a gift (due December 7).
  • Gifts will be distributed to recipients December 11-15.

This is the sixth year of JCCC Gives, which started when a Student Senator learned about a fellow student facing financial hardship for the holidays. According to Anne Turney, Manager of Student Life and Leadership Development, the charitable program has grown every year since.

“In 2016, $3,100 was raised to purchase more than 260 gifts for about 45 people,” said Turney. “Not only is the giving part growing; the number of students and staff participating by submitting nominations, donating and purchasing gifts has taken off, as well. It’s a great opportunity to get involved in your JCCC community.”

Senate Gives You a Voice

JCCC Gives is just a small part of what the Student Senate does every day. Besides providing government representation for the student body, allocating funds to student organizations and overseeing special events, the Senate is your student voice on campus.

When Senate Secretary Takhmina Mussayeva joined the Senate, she began to see all the opportunities to serve and impact change on campus, as well as in the community. “Through JCCC’s Senate, students are directly reaching into the College community and actually helping make change on campus,” Mussayeva said. A liberal arts student originally from Kazakhstan, she loves all the ways the Senate allows her to share her voice and serve others, something she said didn’t happen in her native country.

Mussayeva said the Senate—made up of five officers and 25 senators at-large—focuses on listening to students. “We want to hear what is on your mind to help you make the most of your educational experience at JCCC.”
