Championship basketball: Both men and women head to Nationals

Both the women’s and the men’s basketball teams from Johnson County Community College will be playing in their respective 2017 NJCAA Division II Tournaments.

The Lady Cavaliers travel to North Arkansas College in Harrison, Ark., for its first game at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 21. They face District O winner, Lackawanna College (19-10) of Scranton, Penn.

JCCC (30-2), the District B winner, was awarded the No. 2 overall seed in the 16-team tournament field. 

Johnson County will be making its 11th appearance in the NJCAA D-II Tournament. Their last appearance was in 2015, when the Lady Cavaliers claimed the second national title in team history by defeating No. 1 seed Parkland College 66-64 on a buzzer-beating shot.

The Lady Cavaliers have an all-time record of 21-11 in tournament play, which ranks fourth all-time.

The men’s basketball team heads to Danville Area Community College in Danville, Ill. They’ll hit the court at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, to battle No. 4 seed Parkland College (27-3).

The matchup will be a battle between two of the top free throw shooting teams in the country. Parkland ranks fifth nationally with a team free throw accuracy mark of 73.2. One spot back at 73.0 are the Cavaliers (24-8). They are also side-by-side in the national rankings in 3-point accuracy.

Johnson County will be making its fifth appearance in the NJCAA D-II Tournament and sixth over at nationals. In 2001 and 2009, head coach Mike Jeffers guided those teams to national championships.
