IM Advising

You can ask a counselor general, quick and nonpersonal questions through Instant Message (IM) Advising.

Hours

You're likely to find one of us online from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, but service availability may vary. If an adviser's status is online in the IM box, someone is available to answer your question.

If we're not online, send us an email. Please allow up to two working days for an email response.

Personal Information

DO NOT discuss personal information in the IM box. DO NOT type your Social Security number, student ID number or any other identifying information into the IM box.

The feature is not secure, and others may view your messages. Counselors can't discuss personal information via IM because of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

How to Use the IM Box

  1. Check the status to see if an IM adviser is online.
  2. Type your question into the dialog box.
  3. Wait for the adviser to respond.
  4. Ask a follow-up question if necessary.
  5. Let the IM adviser know when your question has been answered or if you need to end the session for any reason.

If your question requires more attention, the IM adviser may provide contact information to follow up with you directly via e-mail or phone.

We can answer these types of questions via IM.

  • Will HIST 141 fulfill a humanities requirement?
  • When can I start enrolling for the fall semester?
  • Where do I take my placement test at JCCC?
  • Can I drop my classes online?

We CANNOT answer these types of questions via IM.

  • What math class did I place into?
  • I'm having difficulties with my English teacher, what should I do?
  • What do I need to take each semester I'm here in order to graduate in two years?
  • Do my credits from another school transfer to JCCC?
  • I think I am interested in English, what can I do with a major in that?

IM advising is not intended to replace in-person advising. We believe quality academic counseling is critical to reaching your educational goals.
