About Civic Honors

Why have a Civic Honors program?

At Johnson County Community College, community is not merely a part of its name - it is a part of the college’s purpose and personality. Furthermore, it reflects long-term commitment to the community - as a partner and as a resource—which promotes the kind of collaboration that distinguishes strong communities.

Civic responsibility is an important part of being a good employee, a good neighbor, a good citizen and a good student. A JCCC student graduating with civic honors is one who has made civic education and community experience a deliberate part of his or her college education and one whose civic efforts and achievements have been exemplary.

In 2004, JCCC introduced its Civic Honors program, which provides a framework of courses, training, reflection, and experience which is designed to increase a student's capacity for, self-confidence in and commitment to effective community engagement and participation.
