ESL (Life Skills) Classes

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

Whether you speak little or no English, JCCC offers English as a second language courses at your level. ESL courses are available for permanent Kansas residents, 16 years or older, who are not otherwise enrolled in school. All students must buy the required textbooks. If you want to enroll in English classes, you must attend a two-day orientation and testing. Here is what you must do:

Step 1.

Sign up in person for the next scheduled two-day orientation and testing. Sign up at the location you want to attend. No phone sign-ups will be accepted. You will be given an orientation and testing appointment card listing the days and times of your orientation and testing.

Step 2.

Show up both days of orientation and testing. Bring your appointment card with you. Arrive on time. If you come late you will not be able to participate in the orientation and testing. You will be rescheduled to the next available orientation.

If you are under the age of 18

Due to the passage of the Kansas Compulsory School Attendance Law, if you are 16 or 17, you must obtain a compulsory school attendance disclaimer and compulsory attendance exemption form from the public high school in the school district where you currently live. You must bring your compulsory school attendance disclaimer and compulsory attendance exemption form with you when you come to Johnson County Adult Education/ESL classes.

Emancipated Minors:

You will need to bring your court-ordered document with you when you come to Johnson County Adult Education classes or register for the test.

Married 16- and 17-year-olds:

You will need to bring your marriage certificate with you when you come to Johnson County Adult Education classes.
