Notetaker Opportunities

Opportunities are available each semester for JCCC students interested in taking class notes for students with documented disabilities. Notetakers can receive up to $50 per credit hour for the note-taking service they provide. Contact Access Services for more information.

Notetaker Responsibilities

Notetakers are recruited in classes in which a student who qualifies for the accommodation is enrolled. Notetakers are responsible for providing a copy of the notes they already would be taking of the lecture material presented by the professor.

Notetakers must:

  • Remain enrolled in the class for the full semester
  • Attend all classes
  • Strive to earn a good grade in class
  • Have legible handwriting
  • Take notes using an organized, comprehensive technique

Volunteer to be a Notetaker

Two weeks prior to the start of each semester, a Notetaker Recruitment Bulletin is emailed to each student's JCCC student email account who is listed on the class roster in classes with a current notetaker request. Prospective notetakers email the Notetaker Coordinator expressing their interest and are then assigned on a first-volunteer basis.

If a request has not been assigned by the first day of classes or there are any requests after the first day of classes, Access Services staff members visit classrooms to recruit notetakers in person and are assigned on a first-volunteer basis.

Orientation for Notetakers

Access Services provides an orientation for notetakers that details pertinent information and guidelines (PDF) for fulfilling your responsibilities. This orientation is offered by our Continuing Education program and accessed through the ANGEL Learning Management System.

Notetaker Reimbursement

You will receive an email to your JCCC student account asking you to set up direct deposit for your notetaker reimbursement. The email includes the steps for setting up the direct deposit. If you prefer to receive a paper check in the mail, be sure to keep your address current with the college so you receive your payment in a timely manner.

  • Payments are dispursed at the end of the semester.
  • You will be reimbursed at the rate of $50 per credit hour for the credit course in which you take notes.
  • The compensation for noncredit classes and certificate program classes will be determined on a case-by-case basis dependant on actual hours spent in class.
  • If your services are recruited after the start of the semester, you will be paid on a pro-rated basis determined by the number of classes for which you provide notes.
  • If you are taking notes for more than one student, you will be reimbursed at the same rate as for one student.

In the event either you or the student for whom you provide notes drops the course, you will be paid on a pro-rated basis. You will be notified using your JCCC student email when a student drops and your services are no longer required. The date for determining the pro-rated amount will either be the date the student or you actually drop or the specified date on your letter of dismissal.
