The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face to Face sessions that are moderately paced, whole group sessions with an emphasis on participation to gain a conceptual understanding of the material presented.

Resource Use

For face-to-face classes, as with any other course or section, textbooks supplement the lecture (especially if you are absent), and provide the baseline information that I provide in lecture. For testing, some information from the textbook, which was not covered in lecture, is accessed to evaluate the student’s learning.

Most classes have homework in the form of a term paper (lecture classes), 3-4 unit exams, quizzes and a final exam. Approximately 75% of the grade is determined by the unit and final exams, and 25% by the term paper and participation in class discussions.

Homework Policy

I have a relaxed late policy which depends on the student communicating with me prior to missing or being late for an assignment or exam.

Attendance Policy

As with all lecture-based courses, attendance is crucial for understanding. I encourage all students to be on time and to attend all classes. However, absences are NOT part of the grading matrix.

Normally, I am on campus at least one hour before class begins, and I will make it clear that I am available upon making an appointment or via email. I generally answer emails within 24 hours, but this may be longer on weekends.
