The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are typically moderately-paced, whole group sessions with an emphasis on conceptual understanding. Computational examples, applications and question/answer are also included. Students are encouraged to participate. Occasionally students will work together in small groups.

Resource Use

Textbooks are essential in any section I teach. Textbooks supplement the lecture (especially if you are absent), and provide practice problems. In all classes, textbook exercises are the source for the graded homework. Calculators are required; a scientific calculator is sufficient. Cellphone calculators are prohibited during testing. Computer software or video tutorials, whenever needed, will be available for student use in the Math Resource Center. In every math course, web-based materials may be used. Online homework courses will typically not use online homework. My Math Lab is not required but is permitted. Please contact me about activating your account if desired.

Homework is worth 15% and is a completion grade. Attendance is worth 5%. Quizzes are worth 10%. Tests are worth 50% and the final exam is worth 20%. Partial credit is given for problems where work is shown.

Homework Policy

Homework for each unit is due the day of the test for that unit. Homework must be completed prior to each class meeting, to prepare for the class discussion over the material. Questions over homework from the previous week will be answered at the beginning of each class.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding. Attendance points are given, five points per full class period in attendance up to a maximum of 50 points for the semester. Makeup unit exams are not given. The final exam percentage will replace one missed unit exam.

I am available by appointment to come before class or to stay after class. Responses to emails normally occur within 24 hours. All students have access to my phone number as well, to call or text when they need.
