The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

I lecture from the textbook and my notes for the topical material. I supplement the lecture with PowerPoint slides, examples from the text or my own examples. I usually spend a few minutes at the beginning to cover homework questions.

Resource Use

Book: Extensive
Calculator: Limited
Software: Limited

Lecture material and example problems come from the textbook. A graphing calculator is used to supplement the teaching material and to visualize concepts. On a limited basis, MATLAB or MATHCAD may be used for in-class demonstrations.

The student's final grade will be determined from the chapter tests, the final exam, homework and/or homework quizzes, and any take-home projects assigned.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned for each chapter/topic covered. For most classes, the homework will not be collected and graded, however, homework quizzes may be given in class over a few of the problems assigned. See the class syllabus for the specifics.

Attendance Policy

I register attendance at every class. I use this to decide whether to award students a few extra points at the end of the semester if they are on the border of a letter grade. Attendance is required on test days, as there are no make-up exams.

I am usually available immediately before and after class, either in the classroom or the adjunct office in SCI 220. I can be reached by telephone or email. I am not on campus on non-class days.

Additional Information

I am an engineer by degree and profession. I use math as a tool to help me do my job assignments. I like to show students where some of these math concepts are used in the real world.
