The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are typically moderately-paced, whole group sessions with an emphasis on conceptual understanding.  Computational examples, applications, and theory are also included.  Students are encouraged to participate.

Online sections: I DO NOT teach online.

Resource Use

Textbooks are essential in every course  for learning the content.  textbooks supplement the lecture (especially if you are absent), and provide practice problems.  In all classes, some textbook exercises are part of the graded homework either in worksheet or in class quiz.

Calculators are used in every course.  In Math 171 and above, a graphing calculator is required.  In any other course, a scientific calculator is sufficient.

Computer software: Very limited

Online homework:  Not normally

Most classes have homework in some form, 4 or 5 unit exams, and a final exam.  Roughly 75% of the grade will be determined by the unit and final exams, and 25% by the homework and other material in the course.

Homework Policy

Due to fairness considerations, late work is NOT accepted.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding.  However, absences are NOT part of the grading formula.  Makeup unit exams are not given after the exam date.  The final exam percentage will replace one missed unit exam or the lowest unit exam score if it is to the student’s advantage.

I am normally on campus early morning through mid-afternoon Monday through Friday.  Responses to emails normally occur within 12 hours, but possibly longer on weekends.
